Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds Live - A Journal

The original 1978 concept album ‘Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds’ was a massive worldwide hit. Thirty years later, the musical was finally brought to the stage. This film documents the journey as the classic 1978 album becomes a theatre production for the 21st century.

When first released, the original album was critically-acclaimed, selling a total of 14 million copies, winning two Ivor Novello Awards, reaching the top ten in the album charts of 22 countries and number one in eleven of them.

As Jeff Wayne’s idea was to make an ‘honest composition’ of the H.G.Wells novel, to put it on stage and tour the world as a live performance. With the death of Richard Burton in 1984 these plans for a live show were stalled. It was not until recent technological advances that he could be brought back to life in the form of a 10ft high 3-D CGI projection.

Taking us behind the scenes of the new show and revealing the special effects secrets, this film introduces the key characters involved including Jeff Wayne, the actors, musicians and creative production team. With exclusive access backstage we see that rehearsals don’t always run smoothly. With tensions over graphics, a key leading performer severely injures his ankle before the first night, and backstage volatile differences all make for high off-stage drama. Will all the actors make it to the first night? Will Jeff's vision become a huge stage success?

As a lively special this film is testament to the hard work that has gone into a truly spectacular musical event.
