At the end of 2007, a young woman was killed in a tragic and sudden accident on a Sydney street. Her name was Tanja Liedtke, and she was about to begin as the new Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company, a role that had not changed for 30 years.
Even before the shock had passed, Noel Staunton, who has just been appointed as Chief Executive of the company, quickly engaged three internationally renowned choreographers to create one work each during 2008, from a blank canvas.
Each of the three works was unique, and expanded the dancers’ ability and experience, but by the end of the year their need for a new and committed leader was strong.
One of the guest choreographers, Spanish-born Rafael Bonachela, applied for the highly sought after role, and was appointed as the new Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company at the end of 2008.
Blank Canvas charts the creation of ‘We Unfold’, Rafael Bonachela's first critically acclaimed production as Sydney Dance Company's new leader, and vividly celebrates the intense joy and pain of being a dancer.
